Dr. Joseph Garbely is a distinguished physician with over 29 years of experience in addiction medicine, psychiatry, and internal medicine. He currently serves as the Medical Director at Malvern Health Behavioral Health and Addiction Recovery, where he leads a multidisciplinary team dedicated to holistic, patient-centered care.
Triple board-certified in internal medicine, psychiatry, and addiction medicine, Dr. Garbely has built a career focused on improving outcomes for individuals with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions. His approach emphasizes collaborative care and evidence-based treatment strategies tailored to the
unique needs of each patient.
Prior to joining Malvern Health, Dr. Garbely held several leadership roles at Caron Treatment Centers in Pennsylvania, including Chief Medical Officer, Executive Vice President of Medical Services, and Director of the Addiction Medicine Fellowship Program. Dr Garbely has also held the position of Chief Medical Officer for Haven Behavioral Health and Outpatient Center in West Chester. His academic contributions are equally notable—he is a Clinical Associate Professor at Penn State College of Medicine and an Adjunct Clinical Professor at Drexel University College of Medicine.
Dr. Garbely is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM), where he serves as Chair of the Physician in Training Committee and as an ex-officio member of the Board of Directors. He is also a member of the American College of Academic Addiction Medicine and has played a key role in shaping the next generation of addiction medicine specialists.
His excellence in teaching has been recognized with numerous awards, including the
American Psychiatric Association’s Helen Ruske, M.D. Award for Excellence in Medical Student Teaching and the Tower Health
Outstanding Psychiatry Residency Recognition Award. Outside of medicine, Dr. Garbely is a former rugby player with over 20 years of
experience in the sport, reflecting his commitment to teamwork and resilience—qualities that also define his medical practice.
