New Jersey Governor Chris Christie recently announced a ‘new multi-state’ initiative to continue his efforts in helping prevent prescription drug abuse. This is an extension of a program already in place between New Jersey and Connecticut that allows “doctors [to] check whether a patient has previously been prescribed certain controlled drugs, including painkillers.” {source} Christie’s announcement stated that Delaware will now be included in this record sharing relationship and in the near future, New York as well.
The event surrounding this announcement “let Christie keep the spotlight on the issue he’s been pushing recently – a call for combating drug addiction in a compassionate, collaborative way.” {source}
Treating drug addiction and reducing the negative stigma surrounding it has become one of Gov. Christie’s choice issues. During an appearance at a recent addiction summit we were able to see the passion behind his efforts when he discussed the loss of a good friend to drug addiction. “The issue separates Mr. Christie from other Republicans eyeing the White House. The governor has pushed to establish special drug courts and programs that help addicts re-establish themselves in the community.” {source}
