What is an Intensive Outpatient Program?

When we think about what an alcohol and drug rehab is, we likely think about residential and inpatient treatment centers where individuals live on-site for the duration of a recovery program. However, there are several different programs that fall into one of two different categories: inpatient and outpatient. In the latter, individuals continue to live at home while commuting to the treatment facility to participate in the essential recovery curriculum. While most programs can be considered inpatient or outpatient, there are actually a number of programs that lie somewhere in between, including intensive outpatient treatment programs.

Intensive outpatient treatment refers to an outpatient alcohol and drug addiction program that offers a curriculum that’s more intensive than a standard outpatient program. An individual who enters intensive outpatient treatment can expect to attend treatments at the facility at least a few days of week. Moreover, treatments consist mostly of counseling, psychotherapy, and group sessions. The goal of an intensive outpatient program is to offer an intensive yet somewhat flexible treatment plan for individuals who are suffering from chemical dependency, helping them to overcome their addictions via participating in social groups, counseling, and skills-building exercises.

Once a person enrolls in an intensive outpatient program for alcohol and drug addiction recovery, he or she is assigned a primary recovery counselor who will assess the individual’s unique needs, help determine an optimal treatment regimen that will address those needs while fitting into an existing schedule and routine, and remain a vital daily resource for the individual for the duration of his or her rehabilitation. Seen as an enhancement of the outpatient format with partial-inpatient intensity, group sessions and counseling form the core of intensive outpatient programs (IOPs), putting emphasis on recovery and healing through socialization, communication, and by readjusting to structure and discipline. In a safe and drug-free environment, individuals in intensive outpatient programs not only receive treatment from the professions who lead the groups, but patients also encourage and support each other in a manner that you might consider similar to twelve-step support groups.

Benefits of Intensive Outpatient Care

Some individuals suffering from chemical dependency prefer outpatient treatment as the primary rehabilitation program. In such instances, intensive outpatient programs offer an experience that’s in between partial hospitalization and a general outpatient program. In other words, it’s an inpatient-like level of treatment intensity in the form of a more flexible, outpatient program. As such, intensive outpatient care is sometimes preferred by those with less severe addictions or individuals who are embarking on the journey of recovery for the first time. However, intensive outpatient programs may not yield optimal results for all individuals, especially for those suffering from more severe addictions such as to painkillers or heroin. Intensive outpatient programs don’t typically offer or require a detox program prior to the start of treatment; due to the opportunity that intensive outpatient programs offer as a means of transitioning from active to sustained recovery, it’s increasingly common for intensive outpatient care to be used as a stepping stone by individuals who have completed an inpatient program and are preparing to transition back to their respective communities while continuing intensive treatments as they adjust to living at home once again.

There are numerous other benefits that intensive outpatient treatment programs offer those who suffer from chemical dependency. For instance, since it offers a greater level of flexibility than partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient treatment programs may make recovery attainable to those who would otherwise be unable to commit to relocating for a residential inpatient program or the more demanding treatment schedule of partial hospitalization. As such, intensive outpatient treatment could hit the “Goldilocks zone”, so to speak, while affording a level of privacy due to not having to explain a prolonged absence from family members, friends, and colleagues. Moreover, intensive outpatient programs still offer many of the therapeutic components as residential and inpatient programs, meaning there’s a strong focus on counseling, psychoeducation, group sessions, skills building, and relapse prevention.

As mentioned above, it’s increasingly common for the ‘Goldilocks’ programs such as partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient to be used as a stepping-stone between inpatient care and an individual’s return home. The time immediately following one’s rehabilitation period when he or she is trying to acclimate to being back home and sober is the most delicate part of the recovery process with the highest risk of relapse; however, an intensive outpatient program can be used to extend the period during which individuals have the support and resources of a high-quality addiction treatment program as they return home and begin rebuilding new lives around their newfound sobriety.

Of course, the intensive outpatient program at Malvern Treatment Centers is unlike any other IOP you’ll find in either the Philadelphia area, the state of Pennsylvania, or even nationwide.
