How women experience drug addiction differently than men

Both men and women can live with substance addiction, but it’s important to realize gender-specific treatment was developed because addiction affects men and women differently.

That’s one of the reasons why Malvern Treatment Centers launched the Women’s Empowerment Program, which is based on the Gender-Responsive Treatment Model and Healing Trauma.

In a recent article in Vice Magazine, Jenny Valentish discusses her new book, Woman of Substances, which explores her decades-long addiction and her life in recovery researching the science behind addiction:

“It’s like before we started thinking about women on festival bills,” Valentish said. “Whatever is the norm, you don’t question it. I never really questioned that these issues might be different for women compared to men in terms of addiction and treatment. But the more research I did, and the more people I spoke to, it turned out to be a bit of a joke—how little research is done into women and women’s experiences. Men are the norm in this research. But in terms of the population, they’re not the norm.”
