State health official discusses treating addiction among senior citizens

March 28, 2018 – The disease of addiction knows no boundaries. It can affect anyone regardless of age, race, gender, financial status, religion and sexual orientation. A Pennsylvania state official recently discussed the challenges of treating drug addiction among senior citizens.

State Department of Aging Secretary Teresa Osborne visited an addiction treatment facility in Reading to highlight efforts to address the worsening drug epidemic. She noted that addiction is a growing problem for seniors, according to the Reading Eagle:

[T]he administration said that addiction in older adults is one of America’s fastest growing health issues.

It said that widowers over the age of 75 have the highest rate of alcoholism in the U.S., and older adults are hospitalized as often for alcohol-related problems as they are for heart attacks.

At the same time, addiction in older adults can be difficult to detect, as warning signs mimic insomnia, forgetfulness and other common age-related health issues, the statement said.
