Philly incorporating recovery house model to combat drug addiction

October 12, 2017 – Philadelphia officials are touting ongoing efforts to combat the opioid crisis in the city.

Now that the city’s Opioid Task Force proposed last month 18 recommendations that would help address the epidemic, health officials have “real momentum” to make changes, according to Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual Disabilities Service Commissioner David T. Jones.

The city is embracing the recovery house model to ensure those in the early stages of recovery can continue in a supportive environment, WHYY reports.

Here at Malvern Treatment Centers, we believe outpatient treatment and recovery houses are vital components to maintaining a life in recovery. (Check out our guide on what to look for in a reputable recovery house.)

Another avenue toward well-being incorporates the recovery house — or sober living house — model. Substance abusers on a path of sobriety frequent the facilities where recovery is supervised and counseling services are available in a group-home setting.

“One of the things that we’ve done is … worked hard to identify certified recovery specialists,” Jones said. “These are people who are in a place, in terms of their own recovery, where they are really able to help another individual who may be really struggling with their substance use disorder.”
