Pa. officials discuss progress on curbing opioid epidemic

November 29, 2017 – Local governments have been implementing programs to reflect the seriousness of the drug crisis. This week, Pennsylvania officials provided an update on the effectiveness of some of those approaches.

In Philadelphia, Gov. Tom Wolf visited Independence Blue Cross on Tuesday to support the insurance company’s policy that limits opioid prescriptions, reports WHYY. Starting in July, the insurer has only covered a maximum five-day supply of opioid prescriptions. Company officials claim that 8,000 fewer members had prescriptions for the addictive painkillers.

The success of the program has prompted lawmakers to pass a law mandating the practice:

Pennsylvania lawmakers are considering writing similar restrictions into state law. A bill passed by the Senate and currently in committee in the House would prohibit the prescription of opioids for more than seven days. The measure would allow exceptions for cancer, hospice care, and other cases when doctors deem longer scripts to be in their patients’ best interests.

Wolf said he supports the legislation.

“I’m doing everything I can to make sure that it gets to my desk,” Wolf said.
