What Pa. declaring opioid epidemic a state emergency means

January 11, 2018 – This week, Pennsylvania became the 8th U.S. state to declare the opioid epidemic as an emergency when Gov. Tom Wolf officially signed the measure. Now, the public is learning how the designation will help those struggling with the disease of addiction.

Currently, the disaster declaration waives 13 state regulations and is in place for 90 days, but it can be extended. The Allentown Morning Call listed five of the most important details to watch.

The effort allows an additional nine state agencies access to the prescription drug monitoring database, force medical providers to document nonfatal drug overdoses to the state, and give first responders the ability to leave the life-saving nasal spray naloxone after responding to a residence.
