New DUI laws going into effect in Pennsylvania later this month

August 3, 2017 — Pennsylvania residents should be aware the state will be changing the punishment that first-time DUI offenders face in court later this month.

On August 25, the new law will require most first-time offenders with a blood-alcohol level higher than 0.10 percent to install an ignition interlock device on their vehicle. Offenders can avoid a suspension of their license and drive with the ignition interlock immediately. The device must be installed on the vehicle for a year.

Drivers who refuse to submit to chemical testing are eligible for an interlock after six months.

According to statistics compiled by Mothers Against Drunk Driving, nearly 2 million drunk-driving attempts have been stopped with ignition interlock devices, including more than 78,000 instances in Pennsylvania between 2003 and 2015.
