Myths about addiction make opioid epidemic worse

February 5, 2018 – Raising awareness and educating the public are two of the most important challenges to curbing the opioid epidemic. Misinformation is allowing the effects of addiction to continue.

For 70 years, Malvern Treatment Centers has treated the disease of addiction believing that recovery is best served through a complete understanding of addiction. That’s the cornerstone of the Malvern Model of Care.

Addiction experts strive to offer the truth about addiction. The latest effort comes from WCPO-TV as reporters attempt to dispel four myths associated with addiction:

The myth: Detoxing on your own is enough

The facts: This misinformation can be deadly.

The myth: Medication-assisted treatment for opioid and heroin users is just replacing one drug for another.

The facts: An already large and growing body of medical and scientific research has proven that medication-assisted treatment is the most effective approach to treat what doctors call opioid abuse disorder.

The myth: Someone has to hit “rock bottom” before they’ll decide to get help.

The facts: This perception can be deadly for those battling opioid addiction.

The myth: I would know if someone I loved was addicted to heroin or opioids.

The facts: For a lot of reasons, that’s not always the case.
