Malvern Treatment Centers is Raising Awareness During National Recovery Month

Malvern Treatment Centers & Bernie Parent focused on addiction and recovery education in September

For Immediate Release:

August 30, 2017 — Plymouth Meeting, PA – The Malvern Treatment Centers, the Delaware Valley’s oldest private addiction treatment facility, will honor National Recovery Month in September by sharing nearly 70 years of experience treating addiction at numerous events throughout the region. With the help of Philadelphia Flyers legend and Malvern Treatment Centers community ambassador Bernie Parent, our team of clinicians and staff will educate the public, raise awareness and support efforts to overcome social stigmas associated with addiction. Now in its 28th year, National Recovery Month is an annual observance to increase awareness and understanding of mental and substance use disorders and celebrate the people who recover.

Recently declared a national emergency by the United States government, the opioid epidemic has had a devastating effect on American families and communities. According to data recorded by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, drug overdose deaths in Pennsylvania rose by 37 percent last year. In the Delaware Valley, 907 deaths were recorded in Philadelphia alone and overdose rates in the surrounding suburbs rose even faster. More resources need to be directed to curb the crisis across the nation.

Throughout National Recovery Month, members of Malvern Treatment Centers family will be at the forefront of community outreach. You can show your support to those suffering from addiction by following us on Facebook and Twitter. Please watch Malvern’s short film “Lost & Found” about heroin addiction from former patients.

“Malvern Treatment Centers is dedicated to helping those affected by the disease of addiction as the drug epidemic continues to wreak havoc on families and communities across the Delaware Valley as well as the United States,” said Dennis A. Deal, MHS, LPC, CCDP-D, Chief Clinical Officer of Malvern Treatment Centers. “The opioid crisis is reaching critical levels because no one is immune to the disease of addiction and the potency of today’s illicit substances can have devastating – often fatal – consequences. We must stand together to inspire more to seek a life in recovery and curb the impact of the drug epidemic, and National Recovery Month is a great time to remind everyone what’s at stake.”

For nearly 70 years, the Malvern Treatment Centers has treated addiction. One of Philadelphia AA’s earliest supporters was Dr. Saul, who believed a 12-step program could benefit recovering alcoholics. In 1946, Saul and Dr. C. Nelson Davis opened the C. Dudley Saul Clinic at St. Luke’s Hospital in Philadelphia. This was the first private alcoholic treatment center in the United States. In 1948, Saul and Davis moved the Saul Clinic from Philadelphia to Malvern and renamed it the Malvern Treatment Centers. Today, Malvern provides an evidence-based, complete continuum of care for those suffering from addiction. Under the Malvern umbrella, we operate two inpatient detoxification and rehabilitation centers, as well as five outpatient locations in the Delaware Valley.

Research suggests that offering our patients an unrivaled understanding of addiction, relapse, and recovery over the course of 90 days improves the likelihood for successful recovery. We strive to provide treatment that gives patients a solid foundation needed for a life of sobriety and happiness.

Dr. Michael W. Shore, M.D. was named “Top Physician” by South Jersey Magazine for addiction psychiatry and leads the Medication Assistance Recovery Program. Dr, Shore, M.D. oversees addiction psychiatric services at Malvern Treatment Centers’s Cherry Hill outpatient facility, which opened in April. Dr. Michael W. Shore, M.D. is Region IV Director of the American Society of Addiction Medicine for NJ, PA & Ohio, and leads the Medication Assistance Recovery Program at Cherry Hill along with psychiatric and addiction services. Malvern Treatment Centers’s Cherry Hill outpatient site specializes in addiction treatment and delivers empathetic and unrivaled care at the new center.
