Local official pushing for state Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs

November 6, 2017 – Legislation has been proposed last week to support an important tool to crack down on inappropriate prescriptions of opiates, which is contributing to the drug epidemic.

The bill, introduced by U.S. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick and co-sponsored by U.S. Reps. Tom MacArthur and Donald Norcross, encourages states to maintain Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMPs) to track controlled-substance purchases. The measure aims to curb “doctor shopping” to ensure prescription drugs are dispensed only when necessary.

Malvern Treatment Centers operates outpatient facilities in districts represented by both Fitzpatrick (in Trevose at 4612 East Street Road) and Norcross (in Cherry Hill at 401 Kings Highway South, Building #1).

“The opioid epidemic is sweeping our nation, and it is vital that we protect our community from the pain and suffering the misuse of opioids causes. This bipartisan legislation provides the pathway to efficiency and effectiveness in the use of grant funds tied to Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs,” Fitzpatrick said. “Our nation’s drug epidemic is a complicated issue, and our response must be multi-faceted; that means reducing unnecessary dispensing of prescriptions by tracking and reporting information that allows physicians, pharmacists, and other health professionals to make informed clinical decisions and identify unseemly prescribing trends.”
