Debunking 5 myths about opioids

January 22, 2018 – Education about the disease of addiction is an important aspect of addressing the drug epidemic. A health expert attempts to set the record straight about opioids.

Adriane Fugh-Berman, a physician and professor of pharmacology and physiology at Georgetown University Medical Center, wrote in the Chicago Tribune about five myths about the role of opioid manufacturers on the current crisis.

The falsehoods are:

1. Opioids are the most effective drugs for chronic pain.
2. Pharma hasn’t caused the addiction epidemic; doctors are at fault for prescribing opioids inappropriately.
3. Addiction to prescribed opioids occurs only in patients who are already addicts.
4. Abuse-deterrent formulations are part of the solution.
5. Public-private partnerships will help solve the opioid problem.

Addiction treatment experts and those who have felt the effects of addiction must continue efforts to raise awareness and educate the public.
