The Benefits of Outpatient Treatment

Asking for help when you are struggling with substance dependence is a humbling and frightening task. At Malvern Treatment Centers, our teams strive to focus on recovery for each individual and compassionate care for all.

Malvern Treatment Centers offer inpatient treatment for detoxification and rehabilitation at three different sites in southeast Pennsylvania. This is the first important step for many individuals, and often the only step. The teams at Malvern Treatment Centers outpatient sites in Pottstown and Bethlehem Pennsylvania are staffed with master’s level clinicians dedicated to helping the individuals we serve to build a solid foundation early in their recovery journey.

Continuing Care After Inpatient Treatment

There are many benefits to continuing care on an outpatient level upon completing an inpatient program, a need for additional support in your recovery, or addressing legal concerns. Our programming strives to help the individuals we work with to ease the anxiety, pressure, and difficulties that day-to-day life brings, without the use of substances to cope. We encourage all the individuals we work with to actively participate in creating a healthy, sober lifestyle. Our outpatient sites offer a variety of services including Partial Hospitalization, Intensive Outpatient, General Outpatient, as well as education services in our Addiction Awareness Program.

Partial Hospitalization Program

The Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is the highest level of care we offer on an outpatient level. This program allows clients to engage in treatment in-person five days a week while living in the community. The team provides both individual and group therapy that focuses on small group processing, mindful activities, and psychoeducation on a variety of topics. One of the barriers we often encounter is the amount of time spent in therapy – “I need to get back to work!” Of course, you do! This program ends early in the afternoon, allowing the individuals we serve to have the freedom to do these things after treatment! PHP is designed to be short-term, typically around two weeks, and helps individuals begin to build their foundation as a sober individual in early recovery with support and accountability.

Intensive Outpatient Program

The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) meets for group therapy sessions three days per week, for three hours at a time. Individuals usually attend IOP for approximately 6 weeks. We offer both morning and evening sessions and allow clients that are 10-15 miles away from the office to engage via telehealth. This program on the continuum of care continues to hold individuals accountable, focuses on processing difficulties in early sobriety, and supports clients in learning and developing as a sober individual through psychoeducation and peer support.

General Outpatient Program

Our lowest level of care is the General Outpatient Program (GOP). These group sessions are held 1-2 times per week, for 90 minutes. These groups are for individuals who have established some clean time, have demonstrated the ability to cope with sobriety, and display actions and behaviors that are consistent with maintaining sobriety. GOP groups are held in the morning, and the evening, with options to come to the office in-person or telehealth. These groups focus on a variety of topics including coping skills, barriers in recovery, mental health, general processing, and more! This is a maintenance level of care and individuals can be engaged anywhere from 10 weeks to six months, or more.

In addition, we offer a specialized GOP group, Professionals in Treatment, for those whose substance use and abuse has impacted their work. We work closely with Secundum Artem Reaching Pharmacists with Help (SARPH), Pennsylvania Nurse Peer Assistance Program (PNAP). We are currently working to revamp this group to accommodate many other professionals such as lawyers, doctors, pilots, and more!

Medication Assistance

One of the most important aspects of our outpatient programming is medication management and medication-assisted treatment (MAT). For individuals involved in any level of care of outpatient treatment with Malvern, they have access to these services with our Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner. This is a beneficial part of the recovery process for those who struggle with co-occurring mental health disorders or see value in Suboxone, Naltrexone, and Vivitrol for their sobriety.

Our teams at our outpatient sites are here when you are ready! Our continuing care coordinators at our inpatient sites make it easy to transition to PHP or IOP after their inpatient stay, and we offer a simple in-person evaluation process for those who come from other inpatient sites or are in need of treatment. All of our clinicians are passionate about the work that they do and are dedicated to helping individuals grow as sober, healthy individuals!

  1. Thanks for pointing out that an intensive outpatient therapy program can also last for months. I’m helping out my brother look for a program like that because he is interested in getting clean after years of being an alcoholic. Hopefully, this will work well and he would have a rather smooth experience.
